Which Foods Are Bad For Your Teeth?
For most people it will be no surprise to hear that what you eat will affect your teeth, for whilst teeth are very strong and hard-wearing, they are also susceptible to decay. So what can you do to make sure that your teeth remain in good condition and what foods should you avoid to prevent cavities? Here we have gathered together the food which are worst for your teeth, so that you can be aware of them and avoid them. Read on to find out more.
Chocolates and Sweets
You have probably been told since childhood that sweets and chocolates will rot your teeth. The truth is I’m afraid, that eaten in excess, they will. Keep consumption of these foods to a minimum and make sure that teeth are cleaned well after eating treats which contain chocolates or sweets.
Sugary carbonated drinks like lemonade and coke should be avoided altogether because of their negative effects on the teeth and the body in general. But beware also of drinks with descriptions which include things like ‘fruit flavoured’ or ‘with a touch of real fruit’ which claim to be good for you. These can in fact contain high quantities of sugar and additives, be very acidic and can be bad for your teeth. Water is really the best choice for teeth, as it does not contain sugars or any hidden nasties.
Acidic foods such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit are fine to consume with a meal but can have problematic effects when eaten alone between meals. Make sure that you rinse your mouth with water after consuming and remove all residual pieces of the fruit from between the teeth.
Although grapes and plums are generally considered to be healthy foods, once they are dried they become far less good for your teeth. The naturally occurring sugars in the fruit become sticky as the fruits dry out, meaning they will stick to the teeth. As the fruits also contain fibre the sugars can even become trapped there causing problems similar to sweets.
Of course it is also important that you have a good dental care regime. Make sure that you brush a minimum of 2 x per day, floss daily and visit your dentist for a check-up every 6 months.
