How Do Dental Implants Work?
The dental implant comes in the form of a cylindrical or tapered bolt. They are most commonly made from titanium to give an incredibly durable structure to your new implant. This ensures the longevity of the tooth implant. As your tissue starts to heal, your jawbone will start to fuse with the implant. As a result, the two regrow their structure in such a way that harnesses a strong foundation for your replacement teeth.
What Happens During The Treatment?
An initial consultation will take place in which your dental surgeon will discuss with you your options and assess your suitability for dental implants. This may require an oral x-ray. If you are suitable and decide to go ahead with the treatment we will book you in for your next appointment.
In most cases your dental implants will be fitted under a local anaesthetic. A sedative can be used in parallel with this to help you feel more comfortable. In some situations where your procedure involved more than one dental implants, you may have the treatment under general anaesthetic.
During the treatment your dental surgeon will make an incision into the gum. They will then drill into the jawbone to make a gap in which the implant will be fitted. The next stage of your treatment will vary depending on your own case. There are a few options:
You may need a second small procedure in which the top of the gum is uncovered at the place where you implant was fitted. This allows for us to then fix your artificial tooth. This can be permanent or temporary (delayed implant).
Another option is that at the same time as your first procedure, you may have the artificial tooth immediately fixed to the implant. This is less common but will be discussed with you at your consultation with the dental surgeon.
After the procedure we will book you in for a follow-up appointment at our dental clinic in Cardiff.
Who are Dental Implants Suitable For?
There are a few conditions that must be met in order for you to be suitable for dental implants. It is important that you have healthy gums and enough bone to fit around the implant safely. This is important for the general structure and to ensure that there will be enough tissue and bone to keep your implant secure for the long term.
It is also key for dental implant patients to be prepared to maintain great oral hygiene which includes visiting the dentist regularly. As well as having great oral health, your general health needs to be good too. There are several diseases such as; diabetes and osteoporosis which can halt the healing process involved in tooth implant treatment. As a consequence the treatment can fail. It is important that you discuss any illness or disease you have with your dentist so that they can understand if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
