Five reasons why adults in Cardiff should get braces

Braces are becoming more popular as they help to improve your looks and confidence and offer millions of adults, teenagers and children a chance to improve their lifestyle by getting their teeth and bites corrected.
However, there are still lots of adults who are too afraid to get their teeth straightened and feel that they are too old for braces.
Here are five reasons why adults in Cardiff should get braces:

Braces help improve your speech and appearance

Orthodontic treatment can help to improve your speech and your appearance. People now have the ability to speak better by properly aligning their teeth using braces, and surgery.
Orthodontic treatments have a positive impact on an individual’s self- esteem and self-confidence. Many research studies have shown that an attractive smile carries social benefits at all ages and levels of society, while an unattractive smile can be a significant social handicap. Appearance can and does make a difference in how a person is perceived and treated.

Straighter teeth can improve your oral health

Straighter teeth are healthier than crooked teeth as they have fewer cavities and are less likely to have problems with discoloration, uneven wear and fractures. By getting braces your gums will be much healthier therefore you are less likely to develop periodontal (gum) disease. Straight teeth and healthy gums will make it much easier for you when eating as you will be able to chew much better. Your teeth are also less likely to be sensitive to heat or cold and you lower your risk of painful and expensive dental problems.

Your confidence will improve with straighter teeth

One of the best reasons to invest in braces is to feel better about yourself. Studies have revealed that a smile is one of the most important things people look for when meeting and dating someone for the first time. An attractive appearance and smile also applies to job opportunities. Like it or not, your smile is a reflection of you.

Research suggests you can live longer with straighter teeth

Did you know that having your teeth straightened can potentially help you live longer? There are well known studies that prove that people who floss daily will live an extra seven years longer. Flossing is much easier when you have room for the floss but tricky when your teeth are crooked and crowded.

Braces can help prevent your teeth from getting damaged

Protruding (buck) teeth can easily break from an accidental fall or sports injuries. By getting your teeth straightened and your protruding teeth back inside your mouth, you will find that you have a better chance of protecting them from an injury. Those of you who play contact sports, should always wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth during orthodontics and after your treatment has been completed.

Why you should wear your retainer when you braces are removed

retainer

Most patients can’t wait to get their braces off after receiving Orthodontic treatment for what can seem like an eternity.

However, patients need to be aware of the final part of their treatment which means wearing a removable retainer.  As tempting as it may be to skip wearing it for a day or two, this can undo all the good work and can even mean starting your orthodontic treatment plan from the beginning.

Here are some reasons why you should wear your retainer when your braces are removed:

Retainers help your teeth stay in new positions

Your teeth are difficult to move and it takes time for the bones and ligaments around the teeth to reform in their new position.  While this is happening, retainers hold them in so they stay in their new positions.

If you don’t wear your retainer, your teeth could move back to their original positions

Your teeth don’t have a memory however, they can remember where they used to go and will try and move back to their original positions if you don’t wear your retainer as instructed by your dentist.  One of the advantages of wearing a retainer is to keep your smile looking great, so if you don’t want your teeth to move back and risk losing the time and money invested into getting braces, you must wear your retainer for the specified time.

There are different types of retainers available

There are now different types of removable retainers available and what’s even better is that you may have a choice of different colours or patterns so you can even customise yours to suit your personality.  Another alternative that may be appropriate is a clear retainer that fits over your teeth, making it nearly invisible.  In some cases, you can have a thin wire bonded to the inside of the teeth instead of a removable retainer.  This doesn’t show, and you don’t have to worry about taking it out.

Time spent wearing your retainer will become less frequent

When your braces are removed you will need to wear your retainer all the time, but after a few months the time spent wearing it will become less frequent and you may only have to wear it at night.  The retention stage will help your teeth avoid damage by allowing the process to end slowly and gently.

You’re not alone

Many celebrities have to wear, or have worn retainers at some stages during their careers.  Even Prince William has worn a retainer, so you’re in great company.

adult_braces

Until recently, braces were most common in teenagers with crooked and crowded teeth. This was until ‘Ugly Betty’ appeared on our TV screens and continued to wear heavy, metal, train track braces for several seasons.

In reality, adults would only need to wear these for up to two years and braces for adults and children are considerably more discreet than what is depicted in ‘Ugly Betty’.

There are many adults in the UK now wearing braces that are either completely clear, or are placed behind the teeth, so no one will notice you are wearing them.

If you are an adult looking for an alternative to metal braces here are some amazing options that Bamboo Dental in Cardiff can offer.

Six Months Smiles

Six Months Smiles can give you the smile that you want in a fraction of the time taken with conventional treatments.

This treatment utilises clear wires and brackets to gently straighten teeth, in an average time of only six months!  By focusing on the teeth that show when you smile and not making significant bite changes.  The team at Bamboo Dental guarantee that you will have straighter teeth within 6 months. As Wales’s leading provider in Six Months Smiles, Bamboo Dental has a 100% success rate.  They will guarantee you straighter teeth within 6 months or they will offer you your money back!  You can now have a new smile from as little as £33.28 per month which also includes free teeth whitening!

Inman Aligner

If you are looking to achieve beautiful, straighter teeth fast, the Inman Aligner is the perfect solution for crowding or protrusion of the front teeth.  It’s not only fast, it’s also very safe and great value for money compared to other systems.  With the patented Inman Aligner, your front teeth can be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks.  The Inman Aligner isn’t as discreet as the Six Month Smiles, however, it has many advantages such as being removable so you can take it out when you eat or clean your teeth. All teeth movements are achieved with a single aligner so there is no need to change your aligners every week.

Smilelign Clear Aligners

Smilelign Clear Orthodontic provides you with a discreet option so that no one will notice you are having your teeth straightened.  This is a popular method of aligning crooked teeth without the use of traditional metal brackets and wires.

Smilelign treatment is completed with a series of virtually invisible, removable aligners.  The aligners are changed every two to four weeks for the next stage.  Each aligner is carefully designed for your teeth and will move your teeth in very small increments little by little, week by week.  You will wear the clear aligners until they have moved your teeth to the final position.

Smile Aligners are worn for approximately 22 hours a day, with treatment times ranging from between 6 and 24 months.

If you live in or around Cardiff and are looking for an award-winning dental practice to help you perfect your smile, call the team on 029 2056 9769.
