Do you dread dental check-ups? Or do you avoid them altogether? The truth is, whatever your reasons, missing dental appointments is never going to lead to the best dental health, so we thought it was about time that we shared our advice for nervous dental patients. A visit to the dentist doesn't have to be scary. Read on to find out how to make your next experience a good one.
Choose an understanding dentist
Firstly it I important to find an understanding dentist who appreciates that you are nervous about visiting. You could ask friends and family to recommend a dentist that they trust, or you could speak to the practice in question and see if their dentists are comfortable dealing with nervous clients. It is very important that you feel listened too as you explain your concerns.
Let them know your'e nervous
Make sure that you tell the dentist you are a little (or a lot!) nervous when you make an appointment. If necessary make a trip the surgery to have a look around before your date, so that you can familiarise yourself with the facilities.
Book an early appointment
Book your appointment earlier in the day, rather than later, so that you don't have time to dwell on it. It seems like a simple idea but this has helped many patients in the past to arrive feeling that much calmer.
Bring a friend for support
If you are afraid to face the experience alone ask a friend to come with you. It can be nice to have someone sitting with you in the waiting room and you can even ask if they can come into the treatment room with you.
Agree on a stop signal
For when treatment is taking place agree a signal with the dentist so that he or she knows if you want to stop. Raising your hand is ideal and clear for everyone.
Consider the option of sedation
This is certainly not an option that we would recommend lightly but if your'e very nervous and need to have a significant amount of dental work done, you can arrange to be sedated during the treatment. This is an effective way of staying relaxed during treatment and ensuring that your teeth still get the care they need. Are you a nervous patient?
