Dealing with bad breath

Bamboo BlogSmile

Bad breath is more common than you may think. The NHS suggest that approximately 1 in 4 people are 'thought to have bad breath on a regular basis'. However, those with bad breath are not always aware that they have it.

Testing for Bad Breath

One common way to check is to lick the back of your hand, wait for the saliva to dry and then smell it. If the smell is unpleasant, it's likely that this reflects the smell of your breath. Alternatively, you can asked a trusted friend or loved one to give you their opinion. This is also something that you can discuss with your dentist.

Causes of Bad Breath

Hygiene: This is the most common cause of bad breath. Without a good oral hygiene routine, there is a build up of bacteria in the mouth, which emit foul-smelling gases when breaking down food particles. It is these gases which cause bad breath. Food and Drink: If the food and drink consumed have strong flavours, then they are likely to contribute to bad breath. Examples include: garlic, spices and coffee. Avoiding these types of food and drink and making sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly will limit the opportunity for bad breath to develop. Smoking: this both makes your breath smell and increases your risk of gum disease, which is in itself a cause of bad breath. Crash Diets: When a person eats less than their body is used to and needs, the body will start to break down fat. This process produces chemicals called ketones which have a distinctive smell and will lead to bad breath. Medical conditions: There are a number of different conditions, such as diabetes and gastrointestinal conditions, which may be the cause of bad breath. Your dentist will be able to ascertain if this is the case and what further treatment may be required.

Treatment for Bad Breath

Following a good oral hygiene routine is the most important thing you can do to avoid bad breath. This means brushing your teeth and gums twice-daily and thoroughly, flossing and using a fluoride toothpaste. It is also important that you clean your tongue as well, as this is a source of bad breath. Ensuring that you follow a diet which will keep you healthy and limiting the amount of strongly flavoured food and drink you consume will also help you keep your breath smelling fresh. It is important to keep having regular check-ups with your dentist as they can check the health of your mouth and address any issues.
