Have you been told that you need dental crowns? Would you like to know more about what dental crowns are and what the process of getting them fitted will be like? Read on to find out more and if you live in South Wales why not get in touch to see what we can do for you?

Why do you need crowns?

There is no one reason why patients will need crowns but if you have broken, cracked or damaged teeth crowns may be a suitable option to return your teeth to a functional state. If eating or chewing have become painful crowns may be able to bring your teeth back into full use. Crowns are an alternative to removing a tooth altogether and will be preferable if the tooth is still in a reasonable state of repair.

So what is a crown made from?

Crowns are a prosthetic tooth device which can be made from a variety of materials, all of which will be durable and hard-wearing. The crown will sit on top of an existing tooth which is damaged hence the name crown. Whatever type of crown you have fitted you can be sure it will last for a long time and it will be safe to have in your mouth.

How does the treatment work?

To have crowns fitted you will usually need more than one visit to the dentist. On your first visit the dentist will assess your tooth and find out if its the right option for you. The dentist will then need to prepare the site and arrange to have the crown made. On your next visit your personalised crown will be fitted into place, with the dentist working to keep pain or discomfort levels to an absolute minimum.

Will I need to replace them?

When fitted correctly crowns can last a lifetime, though like regular teeth they can become damaged or broken if not cared for correctly. Make sure that you give your crowns the best chance of lasting by practicing good oral hygiene.
